This past week, I started a remote internship for GreenLight Fund (GLF), a national nonprofit that has a site in Detroit. I originally would have physically been in Detroit this summer, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic this was unfortunately not able to happen. However, even though it’s all online, I have nothing but good things to say about my first week working with GLF.
I wanted to do DukeEngage Detroit this summer because I have little previous experience in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, but it is something that has always interested me. Before this summer, I had done a little bit of work for a nonprofit based out of Dallas (my hometown), but other than this, my experience was very limited. I’m excited to learn more about the nonprofit world this summer, as I’m still unsure of what career path I want to pursue after college.
I have had a great experience so far while working with the GLF team and Dani Welton, the other DukeEngage student working for GLF this summer. I check in with the team nearly every day, either on Google Hangouts, over the phone, or on Zoom, and everyone has been incredibly friendly and welcoming. I truly believe this summer will be both a productive and informative one. I have already had compelling, profound conversations with my colleagues, both as a team and one-on-one, not only about the mission of GLF, but also about the current state of the world. I’m excited to see what the rest of the summer holds!
