This past week, I’ve spent time learning about our partner organization, Girls Inc., and how they have impacted young women in the Orange County area. While doing so, I’ve reflected on what compelled me to do this program initially — the Girls Inc mission statement of “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.” Thinking on the mission statement, I am reminded of my own experiences where I have been inspired, and many of these times revolve around dance.

From when I was three years old to now, I have been on a dance team of some type. As I grew older, I began to understand the value of having a primarily all girl space. My teammates and I supported one another through the challenges of middle school, high school, and college. On the many teams I have been on, I’ve found role models, met some of my best friends, and received mentorship from many coaches. Girls Inc is an organization that has the same goal of fostering a welcoming community for young women, similar to what I had through dance groups. This week I was able to watch and read testimonials about Girls Inc from young women and I am excited to be partnering with this organization given the incredible statements I have heard and seen. Through this program, I hope to create meaningful connections with the girls participating in the summer camp and embody the mission statement of Girls Inc.
