Nathan Heffernan is studying public policy at Duke University with the intent on continuing his studies in medical school. He is particularly interested in the intersecting areas of social justice, environmental science, and public health; and conducts research at an environmental health lab studying the effects of toxins on humans. Nathan participated in the Duke Engage San Francisco program, where he volunteered at Larkin Street Youth Services, a nonprofit working to end youth homelessness. Additionally, Nathan has an opinion column in the Chronicle where he discusses issues of race and sexuality on campus, issues that influenced his participation in DukeEngage. In his free time, Nathan is a staffer for the pre-orientation backpacking trip ProjectWild.
Following his summer working in San Francisco, Nathan developed the following list of resources for students who are interested in that program — or similar programs.
