DukeEngage immersion programs begin with a pre-departure service academy comprised of a series of experiential preparation workshops. The primary goal of the sessions and workshops are to prepare participants to begin thinking about their service placements, how to best prepare for cross-cultural, logistical, and ethical challenges, as well as develop community with faculty, site coordinators, and fellow DukeEngage participants. The Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy is an intensive intellectual and community building retreat facilitated by DukeEngage staff, experts from the field, faculty, and Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy Leaders (DEALs).
DEALs are DukeEngage student alumni who are interested in sharing their "lessons from the field" through panel discussions, storytelling, and informal conversations. Many students participating in DukeEngage have attributed their success to DEALs that enriched their experience. Academy leaders will facilitate activities and work with student participants as they process workshops. Additionally, DEALs support the logistical needs of the academy. We are looking for both individual and group program participants as well as students that have had domestic and international placements.
