Washington Times article mentions DukeEngage

Posted by Eric Van Danen on 2009-08-28

A Washington Times article written by Christopher Gergen and Gregg Vanourek explores the relationship between institutions of higher learning the communities they serve.  Say the writers: "The most forward-thinking of universities are not just asking the questions, they are creating programs to back them up. These schools realize we need to prepare students to take on a dizzying array of complex challenges now facing our world. Readying them for the typical job path is no longer adequate. Rather, tomorrow's leaders must be innovative problem solvers who can connect the dots across disciplines to create breakthrough solutions to issues such as global hunger, poverty, education and health care. They must become the problem solvers who push the bounds of technology and develop new means of communicating, connecting, traveling, healing and conserving."

Professor offers civic engagement course for returning DukeEngage students

THE POLITICS AND ETHICS OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Mon-Wed 10:05-11:20 am
Taught by Professor Robert Korstad

This summer, hundreds of Duke students are engaged in civic projects, some here in Durham, others in the far reaches of the nation and the globe. Such experiences are challenging and often life changing. But many students find their return to Duke to be the hardest part of their engagement. The Politics and Ethics of Civic Engagement offers the first University-wide space to further explore issues raised by summer experiences. This course seeks to bring together Duke students who have participated in a wide range of civic activities during the summer of 2009 and before. This class will be a place to reflect on the summer experience and process it while further examining the idea of civic engagement by questioning and critiquing it. Building on students’ experiences, we will investigate the causes of poverty, inequality, and ill health in North Carolina, the United States and the rest of the world.  We will then consider multiple ways of addressing these problems—government, philanthropy, social movements, individual good works, and armed struggle. Finally, each student will map out his/her own strategy for civic engagement for both the near and distant future.

The course will be taught by Bob Korstad.  He has been centrally involved in experiential education and civic engagement at Duke for over fifteen years.  He is the former director of the Hart Leadership Program and the BN Duke and Trinity Scholars Program, a founding member of the University Coordinating Committee of the Robertson Scholars Program, and is now a member of the faculty advisory committee for DukeEngage.
