update
For the last 3 days, we have been working in Ciudad pretty much all day. We wake up, eat breakfast, pack lunch, leave at 8:00 am, and arrive a little before 9. Lunch is around 12 and usually we take about 30-45 minutes, then work more until around 3 or so. The first day, I worked in the morning at the archeological site with Professor Bilman, cleaning out a hole dug by looters, which is a walled room from a house from around 1000 years ago (I think that's about right). We had an area of it roped off, where we dug dirt and brushed in the more important areas (along the walls). With the dirt we had collected, we sifted it through a screen, and then sorted ithe rocks by hand looking for bits of coal, ceramic, bone, shell, or any other interesting artifacts which we did not end up finding. It was pretty fun- a good experience to be on an archeological dig. That afternoon, as well as most of today and yesterday, I worked on creating adobe bricks. We pretty much shovel up a huge pile of dirt, pour water on it, mix it into mud, and then use a mold to make bricks out of it. We worked with a man from Ciudad who makes adobes for a living, and he taught us the techniques and stuff to make the consistency right, and to to things most efficiently. I did a lot of digging, carrying buckets of water and mud, hand scooping mud and pressing it into the molds. In three days, we made about 400 bricks total, with usually about 3 or 4 working at a time. We are going to use the bricks for a sign to designate the archeological site, to help keep it protected. I have also talked to some members of the community, and we are having a town meeting on Sunday, with a lunch, to talk about the water project and other ideas. The work has been tiring but I have enjoyed it, and have been going to bed fairly early, around 11 or 11:30. We have off tomorrow morning and are doing project planning at the house tomorrow afternoon, then we have off Sunday morning before we go into Ciudad. I think I am going to take another surf lesson one of those mornings. I am pretty tired, but not in a bad way, just a little exhausted from doing the labor, and playing soccer this afternoon when we returned to Huanchaco. Having a great time!
