Duke receives Community Engagement Classification from Carnegie Foundation

Posted by Eric Van Danen on 2009-02-06

Duke University’s efforts to incorporate community engagement and outreach into the student experience were honored recently by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Duke was one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the Community Engagement Classification from Carnegie.  Duke earned the recognition within the category “Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships.”

Duke’s submission described the nature and extent of its engagement with the community both local and beyond. This approach enabled the Carnegie Foundation to address elements of institutional mission and distinctiveness that are not represented in other national data on colleges and universities.

Elaine Madison, director of the Community Service Center and senior advisor to DukeEngage and the Duke Center for Civic Engagement, supervised Duke’s application.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by a classification that underscores a truly core part of Duke’s mission—to be engaged in our local, domestic and international communities, whether through academic pursuits or immersive, meaningful service,” Madison said.

Madison added that many groups collaborated on the application, including the Duke Center for Civic Engagement / DukeEngage, the Community Service Center, the Duke Durham Neighborhood Partnership, the Office of Service Learning, and the Department of Community and Family Medicine and others.

Carnegie President Anthony S. Bryk said, "We hope that by acknowledging the commitment and accomplishment of these engaged institutions, the Foundation will encourage other colleges and universities to move in this direction. Doing so brings benefits to the community and to the institution."
