HOW LONG DOES A DUKEENGAGE EXPERIENCE LAST?
Each DukeEngage experience—whether an individual or group project—is a minimum eight-week commitment.
WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION DO STUDENTS NEED TO PROVIDE FOR A PROPOSAL?
1. Introduction stating the purpose of the proposed project including the plan and goals of the project.
2. Description of your academic and personal interest in the proposed project.
3. Description of your interests in working with the proposed population that the project targets.
4. Thoughtful summary of your preparation thus far (and any planned additional coursework or preparation) including a short literature summary of the additional reading you will undertake before your departure.
5. Description of work or volunteer experience that demonstrates the following skills or abilities: initiative in carrying out activities, experience coordinating projects with others, leadership.
6. Description of the community with which you will be working. Make a comparison between the proposed community and your “home” community. Describe the needs of the community and how this project aims to address these specific needs.
7. Outline of the stages of the project in the form of a potential timeline and work summary, including incremental goals and benchmarks. Include specific goals and learning outcomes you hope to achieve and skills you hope to develop through carrying out this project.
WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS DUE?
DukeEngage has a rolling admissions process which runs through March 31, with applications due between mid-January (individual projects) and mid-February (group site projects).
WHAT ABOUT THE MANDATORY WORKSHOPS?
Examples include civic engagement, goals and expectations, professionalism, cross-cultural competence, logistics and safety, and special issues such as gender, minorities, LGBT, and students with disabilities. Students will benefit from both required and elective workshops.
